Ski touring

Karavanke is a well-liked destination for half-day or one-day skiing, even for less experienced touring skiers, due to its slightly lower elevation and advantageous location with a beautiful view of the Julian Alps and the Ljubljana basin. Furthermore, the peaks in western Karavanke are bare and offer extensive ski slopes.

The most visited by ski touring skiers in the municipality of Jesenice are Hruški vrh (1776 m), Klek (1753 m), Struška (Veliki vrh, 1944 m) and Vajnež (2104 m). All are accessible from Planina pod Golico and Javorniški Rovt and are connected to the ski touring area between Dovška Baba (1896 m) and Stol (2236 m).

Ski touring is only possible when there is enough snow. There are no special markings in nature for the touring ski trail.

Tobogganing

Tobogganing

The tradition of tobogganing in the villages below Golica is very old, and it arose from the need to transport locals to the valley to work or school in winter, when the roads were covered in snow. This gave rise to recreational tobogganing, which entertained the people of Jesenice on their trips to Karavanke, but it quickly evolved into a competitive sport. The Sava Caves natural tobogganing run is located in Planina pod Golico in the Sava Caves area.

If there is enough snow, the track is 700 metres long and is ideal for family tobogganing. There is a large parking lot nearby, and on weekends and holidays, sleighs and refreshments with hot drinks can be rented. Night tobogganing is also available for pre-arranged closed groups of up to 40 people.

Ski resort and excursion destination Španov vrh

One of the oldest chairlifts in Slovenia runs from Planina pod Golico to Španov vrh, which has been in operation with minor interruptions since 1964.

Španov vrh is known as a starting point for many hikers during the year, and during the winter months, it is popular among touring and alpine skiers. The slopes are full of fragrant flowers when the mountain daffodils are in bloom, and hikers are spoiled by wonderful views of the Julian Alps with Triglav in the foreground.

here is enough snow, the chairlift operates on weekends only, and only if there is enough demand during the week. The single chairlift has two stations, one in the middle and one at the end, and the medium-difficulty slope is 2,200 metres long.
